:: LOS ANGELES, OCTOBER 2016 ::
PHASE ONE: SCAVENGER HUNT
The intervention began a week in advance of the performance: ticket stubs featuring images from recent news events were hidden in the library at California Institute of the Arts. Participants looked up call numbers corresponding to texts discussing the responsibility of the artist in times of social and political unrest. Hidden in the books were maps directing participants to the performance location.
PHASE THREE: WATER CEREMONY
At the top, musicians accompanied a Butoh-inspired water ritual.
PHASE TWO: SILENT ASCENT
The following weekend, at sunset, participants arrived at a trailhead and ascended the mountainside in silence.
PHASE FOUR: COLLECTIVE GRAFFITI
Participants were then invited to participate in an act of collective graffiti on the water tower itself by writing a response to the question: As artists, how can we serve?
Passersby who happened to stumble upon the performance participated as well.
